Prominent Kokomo attorney Vernard L. Johnson died Friday morning after he was hit by a car near his home on West Boulevard.
Kokomo police said a vehicle driven by David Rogers, 42, Kokomo, was traveling west in the 2600 block of West Boulevard at around 6:35 a.m. and struck the 76-year-old man. Johnson was transported to St. Joseph Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.
Rogers was not charged in the crash, Kokomo Police Department Major Brian Seldon said.
Seldon said it appears Johnson was crossing the street, possibly to get his morning newspaper when he was hit.
The accident remains under investigation.
Johnson was a well-known attorney, who will be missed, Seldon added.
“Everybody knew him,” the officer said. “He was a good person. It’s an unfortunate situation.”
Howard County Prosecutor Mark McCann, who has known Johnson for about 25 years, also was saddened by the news.
“He was a super guy,” McCann said.
Johnson practiced law in Kokomo for more than 30 years as a civil and criminal defense attorney and recently served as the deputy public defender for child support cases.
“He was just an all-around great guy,” McCann added.
Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact the Kokomo Police Department at 765-459-5101.
