---- — Howard County Reads has announced that part of the proceeds from last year’s My Sweet Savannah event will be used to fund a $500 scholarship competition.

“We had a great response to My Sweet Savannah, thanks to those who attended, Tom and Carol Trine and the Elite Banquet & Conference Center, Cherresa Lawson and her fellow musicians’ blues music, and generous businesses who donated items for a silent auction,” said Trisha Shively, head of the Howard County Reads committee. “We don’t want to keep the proceeds; we want to share them with the community and give back.”

This year’s Howard County Reads selection, “Out of the Easy,” by Ruta Sepetys, references the following quote from Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield: “Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show.”

To enter the scholarship contest, each participant must submit a three-page essay that answers the following question: How does the Dickens’ quote relate to the journey of the characters in “Out of the Easy” and to your personal journey as you prepare for college?

“We’re offering a $500 scholarship toward the accredited college of your choice,” said Nicole Porter, coordinator of Children’s Services, who is overseeing the competition.

Contestants must be residents of Howard County and a current junior or senior in high school, a college student, or planning to enroll in an accredited college during the next 12 months.

Entries may be sent via email to the Kokomo-Howard County Library at hcrscholarship@KHCPL.org or submitted via the Online Scholarship Essay Contest Form, which may be found at www.HowardCountyReads.org. Entries may also be mailed to the following address: Nicole Porter, Children’s Services coordinator, Kokomo-Howard County Library, 220 N. Union St., Kokomo, IN 46901.

Entries must be received no later than Oct. 18.

Go to www.HowardCountyReads.org for complete scholarship rules, how entries are judged, and more information.

The winner will be announced on Nov. 7 at Indiana University Kokomo at the Author Visit.
