Proposed plea set in freezer homicide case

If accepted, Walter Logan could serve less than 10 years in prison

If a plea is granted, a man charged with killing another man and stuffing his body in a freezer last year could serve less than 10 years in prison.

The recommended plea filed in the case against Walter Logan, 53, calls for him to plead guilty to a Class C felony reckless homicide charge and B felony possession of cocaine charge.

A murder charge and criminal confinement charge would be dismissed if the plea is granted by Howard Circuit Court Judge Lynn Murray at an Oct. 9 hearing.

The proposed plea agreement reached by Deputy Prosecutor Jeremy Peelle and defense attorney Jeffrey Elftman calls for Logan to be sentenced to the maximum of 20 years in prison on the drug charge and the maximum of eight years in prison for reckless homicide. The plea calls for the sentences to run concurrent, meaning at the same time.

In Indiana, prison terms can be cut in half with credit for good behavior, reducing the possible sentence to 10 years. Plus, Logan has already served a year in jail since his arrest and would get a-day-for-day credit for time served.

Kokomo police arrested Logan in December after police found the decomposed body of Alex Shipp, 29, inside an unplugged freezer in the basement of Logan’s home on East Elm Street. During an interview with police, Logan admitted to binding Shipp’s hands, feet, nose and mouth with duct tape after a fight, court records show.

Logan told investigators he fell asleep after the fight. When he awoke, Logan said, he checked on Shipp and saw blood around Shipp’s head and knew he was dead. Six or seven hours later, Logan told police, he carried Shipp’s body to his basement and put it in a freezer, according to reports.

Police initially charged Logan with murder.

Then in June, Peelle filed additional charges of murder while attempting deviate conduct, reckless homicide and confinement against Logan.

Last month, Peelle filed an additional charge of Class B felony possession of cocaine the same day he filed the plea, court records show.

If convicted on the original charge, Logan faces up to 50 years in prison.
