Kokomo-Center Schools will open a new middle school and change programs at the existing middle schools for the 2013-2014 school year.
The school board unanimously approved a recommendation to open Bon Air Middle School, the third middle school in the district, as a 1-to-1 technology school. The recommendation also designated Central Middle School as a magnet school for international studies for the 2013-2014 school year. Central is on track to become an integrated arts school the following year. Maple Crest Middle School will host career and traditional education programs.
Bon Air Middle School has not been in operation since the 2010-2011 school year. With its reopening, the school will be a “1-to-1 technology” school, meaning each student will have individual access to a computer or tablet.
“The new Bon Air Middle School will be completely renovated and updated with new facilities, modern classrooms and lots of interactive technology,” Superintendent Jeff Hauswald said. “These changes will provide students with a tech-rich environment in a small-school setting where their individual interests and needs can best be met.”
Assistant Superintendent Pennye Siefert said the addition of a technology school will provide students with a modernized learning environment.
“This is a new way of thinking, learning and problem solving both for the teachers and the students,” Siefert said in a release.
The Bon Air school will be attended by students attending Bon Air and Pettit Park Elementary 1-to-1 Tech Schools, or other students in the district wishing to attend provided they complete an application process. If students attending those elementary schools wish to attend Maple Crest or Central Middle Magnet for International and Integrated Arts Education, they may choose to apply to attend those schools. School registration begins in February 2013 for the 2013-2014 school year. Any student may apply to any program, and transportation is provided for Kokomo Center residents.
