— A local consignment shop Monday reported the theft of nearly $3,000 in high-end fur coats, including a dark-brown mink coat worth $1,500.

Kelly Kemper, manager of Our Friends Closet, 3537 S. LaFountain Street, said she realized six coats were missing after a customer requested to view one that had been placed in layaway. Kemper said she couldn’t find it, and discovered five more coats also missing after doing an inventory search.

The coats were made from rabbit, possum, lamb, mink and fox furs, and were valued in total at $2,800. The cost to replace the coats, however, was placed at $8,500.

“These were really, really special coats,” Kemper said. “They were beautiful. I’m sick to my stomach right now.”

She said there were no signs someone tried to break into the store and believes the coats were stolen during normal business hours.

Police said Monday there are currently no suspects in the case.

Kemper said the store will no longer carry fur coats because of the theft.

“It’s not worth the risk,” she said.
