---- — Peru, Maconaquah and North Miami all dropped opening-round games in girls basketball sectionals last week.

Peru and Maconaquah played in the Class 3A Western Sectional. Northwestern beat Peru 42-38, and No. 6-ranked Western beat Maconaquah 52-20.

Peru and Northwestern were meeting for the second time in less than two weeks. Northwestern had beaten Peru 44-43 in a Mid-Indiana Conference game on Jan. 31. The rematch proved tightly contested as well.

Northwestern held a 17-16 lead at the half with six different players cracking the scoring column before upping its lead up to 32-25 by the end of the third quarter.

Peru (6-12) pulled within two at 34-32 with 3:40 to play on a putback by freshman Anna Weeks, but Northwestern post Brooke Treadway took charge, scoring on Northwestern’s next three trips down on a pair of putbacks and a jumper from the top of the key to help push the Purple Tigers’ lead back out to 42-34 with 1:14 to play.

Weeks led Peru with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Shirley Morens finished with 12 points and five rebounds for the Bengals, and Josie Murphy added 11 points, six boards and four assists.

In Western's victory over Maconaquah, the Panthers built a 24-4 lead by the end of the first quarter. Western’s starters played sparingly the rest of the way.

Western led 31-9 at the half, and held the Braves (1-18) scoreless in the third quarter, building a 41-9 lead heading into the fourth.

Addie Shinn led Maconaquah with eight points off the bench. Courtney Campbell added five points and three assists.

Western went on to beat Northwestern and Benton Central to win the sectional.

• North Miami played in the Class 2A Northfield Sectional. Southwood beat the Warriors 61-37 in the opener.
