---- — Around 500 people showed up to sample a slew of local chili recipes at the annual Miami Heartland Chili Cook-Off along the Peru Riverwalk Saturday despite a severe thunderstorm that forced the event to close early.

People who made it to the cook-off could sample chili from 29 different vendors. Attendees also had the chance to take a look at antique, souped-up rides at the car show or participate in a cornhole tournament.

The event raised $3,000 for the local non-profit Harvesting Capabilities, which promotes inclusion and community access for people with disabilities, senior citizens and their family members.

Jeff Morehead, vice president of the organization, said it was a successful event even though chili tasters only had an hour to eat before the storm hit.

"Despite the rain, it was a great turnout," he said.

Boondocks Food and Spirits walked away with the People's Choice Award. Blair Ridge Health Campus received the Showmanship Award.
