Police arrest motorcycle club president

South Bend man charged with having stolen gun.

PERU — A South Bend man, who said he is the president of a national motorcycle club, was arrested Sunday after state police said they found a stolen rifle in his vehicle.

Alfred Dillard, 53, was arrested after state police said they stopped his truck on U.S. 31 in northern Miami County for failing to use a turn signal and following too closely.

Police said Dillard identified himself as the president of the Naptown Riders Motorcycle Club, after he was asked about clothing he was wearing that associated him with the group.

Police said they discovered a rifle in his truck. A check on the weapon revealed it was stolen.

A background check on Dillard revealed he had a previous violent crime conviction, police said.Dillard was arrested and taken to the Miami County jail on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a B felony, and possession of stolen property, a C felony.

The Miami and Fulton county sheriff's departments assisted in the arrest. Dillard bonded out of the Miami County jail Monday.

The Naptown Riders have 28 chapters throughout the U.S., including chapters in Kokomo, South Bend and Indianapolis, according to the club's website.

The group has a history of run-ins with police. In 2005, law enforcement agencies served a warrant on the Indianapolis branch headquarters after authorities said a wave of complaints about noise, gunshots and rowdiness in the club's parking lot prompted a police raid, according to an Indianapolis Star article.

Thirty-three customers were charged with visiting a place that unlawfully sold alcohol and were issued court summonses, the Star reported.

Police jailed 12 other customers who were charged with drug possession, public intoxication and warrant violations. Police also seized heroin, cocaine and marijuana in the raid.
