Virginia R. McKinnis, 81, Thorntown, died Tuesday morning, March 25, 2008, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Mich. Virgina was born in Tipton, on Feb. 1, 1927. She was the daughter of the late George Sidney and Winona Elizabeth (Prifogle) Henry. She was married in Tipton, on March 17, 1946, to Dale Devere McKinnis, and he died on Aug. 9, 2001.
Virginia lived in Tipton, moved to Missouri for a few years, and returned to Tipton, where she graduated from Tipton High School in 1945.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed her family and their activities. Following her marriage, she resided in Bloomington, and Tipton prior to moving to Whitestown in 1954. The family moved to the present Thorntown residence in 1974.
She was a pilot and enjoyed air races. She was a former member of Zonta in Lebanon and the 99ers Women’s Flying Club in Indianapolis. She rode motorcycles, taught Sunday School, and liked to sew.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lebanon.
She is survived by two children, Wayne A. McKinnis, Thorntown, and Donna Hosfield and husband Dean, Holt, Mich.; two sisters, Nancy Sottong and husband Alan, Tipton, and Linda Sottong and husband Russell, Kempton; six grandchildren, Howard Ebert, Lake Cicott, Tammra K. Thornton and husband Mike, Lawton, Okla., Dale W. Truax and wife Sherry, Avon, and Danielle N. Hosfield, Clayton J. Hosfield and Brooke E. Hosfield, all of Holt, Mich.; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine S. Roberts; a granddaughter, Lisa Ann Flores; and two sisters, Thelma Jean Henry and Marjorie Sloan.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2625 Elm Swamp Road, Lebanon, with the Rev. Scott Mauch officiating. Interment will be at the Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
