Daniel Lee Klaasen

Nov. 29, 1936 - July 16, 2008

Daniel Lee Klaasen, 71, Greentown, went to his heavenly home at his son’s residence in Greenwood, at 2:51 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008. He was born Nov. 29, 1936, in Jackson, Mich., to Robert Lincoln and Muriel Anna (Loeffler) Klaasen. On Aug. 19, 1960, in Greentown, he married Esther Kathleen (Johnson) Klaasen and she survives.

Daniel retired after having taught sixth- and eighth-grade math in Kokomo-Center Schools for 31 1/2 years. After his retirement, he did construction and maintenance for the church and himself.

He graduated from Mount Carmel High school in 1954 and then entered college at Kentucky Mountain Bible College, graduating in 1957. He then attended Indiana Wesleyan University, graduating in 1961, and finished his master’s in education at Ball State University, graduating in 1966.

He was a member of Greentown Wesleyan Church and had served as treasurer and was a choir member.

He enjoyed reading, birdwatching, construction and repair for the church and home.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Klaasen; sons, Dr. Robert and wife Karen Klaasen, Greenwood, and Paul and wife Wendy Klaasen, Jonesborough, Tenn.; grandchildren, Jonathan and Joey Klaasen; stepbrothers, Waldon, Duane and Paul Kurtz.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. Klaasen; mother, Muriel Klaasen Kurtz; stepfather, Vernon Kurtz; and grandparents, Cornelius and Marie Klaasen.

A memorial service honoring Daniel’s life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Greentown Wesleyan Church, 120 N. Maple St., Greentown, with Pastor Paul Boss officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Greentown. Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. until time of service on Sunday at Greentown Wesleyan Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Greentown Wesleyan Church Building Fund.

Arrangements are being handled by Hasler-Stout Funeral Home Greentown.
