Georgia V. Miller, 96, Galveston died 5:24 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2008, at North Woods Village, Kokomo, where she had been a resident since January of this year. She was born, Nov. 21, 1911, in Springdale, Ark., to William and May McQuiston. On Feb. 19, 1930, she married John Franklin Miller, who preceded her in death June 13, 1940.
All five of her children preceded her in death; John William Miller, Vivian Maude Lovell, Mary Ruth Gillis, Sherman Arthur Miller and Paul Eugene Miller.
She lived her life in Greentown, Jerome, Kokomo and Galveston. She worked many years baking pies at Kresge’s on the courthouse square in Kokomo. In the early 1960s she was the owner and operator of the Home made Pie Shop in Kokomo. She served as a matron for the Howard County Sheriff Department in the 1970s. During the later years she worked taking care of many elderly people in their homes. For the past 10 years or so she was cared for by her daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Lee Gillis of Galveston, who preceded her in death.
“Granny,” as she was known by all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, was always known as very loving, caring, and a joy to be around. She enjoyed life, always very giving of her love and time to family and friends who were in need, never asking for or expecting anything in return.
“Granny” will be sadly missed by her family and friends. She truly left a legacy and memories that will live on in the hearts of her loved ones forever.
She was also preceded in death by one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Mable Alice and Amy Marie; three brothers, Theodore Roosevelt, William Harrison and Sherman Seigal McQuiston.
Graveside services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jerome Cemetery in Howard County with the Rev. Warren Purcell officiating. No public visitation is planned.
