Ray Aubrey Evans

March 27, 1935 - Sept. 8, 2012

Ray Aubrey Evans, 77, Greentown, passed away into his loving heavenly Father’s arms at 6:23 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Kindred Transitional and Rehabilitation Center, Kokomo. He was born March 27, 1935, in a log cabin in Shelby County, Ill., to the late Phon and Verna (Tucker) Evans. On Dec. 16, 1961, he married Beverly Ruth Gilliland at Bondville Methodist Church in Bondville, Ill., and she survives.

Raised in Illinois, he was a 1954 graduate of Champaign Senior High School, Champaign, Ill. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving as engineman third class from 1955 to 1959 on the U.S.S. Rochester. After military service, he attended Parkland College, Champaign, Ill., and Mount Vernon Bible College, Mount Vernon, Ohio, becoming an ordained minister in 1977 and leading several churches in Ohio and Illinois.

He enjoyed retirement, spending time with family, especially his seven grandchildren. He continued his education at Ivy Tech Community College, Kokomo, and enjoyed Bible study groups and Sunday school classes at Converse Church of Christ, where he was an active member.

He is survived by his two sons, Andrew (Kelly), Mount Vernon, Ohio, and Joshua (Leslie), Lafayette; his daughter, Deborah (Dustin) Evans-Cantrell, Indianapolis; his brother, John (Marilyn) Evans, Van Buren, Ark.; his sister, Diana Sawyer, Walterboro, S.C; and his seven grandchildren, Noah, Jesi, Jonah, Adison, Hunter, Grace and Faith.

A celebration of life memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Converse Church of Christ, 301 E. Wabash St., with Dana Biggs and Brent Kirby officiating. Friends and family are invited to call from 3 p.m. until service begins. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Post 317 immediately following service. He will be buried at sea by the United States Navy.

The family requests contributions be made to Converse Church of Christ in Ray Evans’ name. Arrangements were made for the family by Hasler-Stout Funeral Home, Greentown. Online condolences can be made at www.hasler-stout.com.
