Shirley Ann Prater, 62, Kokomo, passed away at 3:40 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, in St. Joseph Hospital, Kokomo. Born Feb. 24, 1950, in Kokomo, she is the daughter of the late Ernest Waltermeier and Frances (Smillie) Waltermeier. On Sept. 28, 1967, in Kokomo, she married J.C. Prater Sr., and he survives. She was currently employed at Cintas Corp. (formerly Mechanics Laundry) for over 30 years. She loved spending time with her grandkids and great-granddaughter.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, J.C. Prater Sr., Kokomo; one son J.C. Prater Jr. and significant other Amy Baker, Kokomo; three daughters Kim (Jeff) Young, Kokomo, Tina (Robert) Bougher, Bringhurst, and Sandy Prater, Kokomo; one brother, Bob Waltermeier, Florida; three sisters, Esther Barnard, Pat Browning, and Dee Hayes, all of Kokomo; grandchildren, Andrea (Jason) Gilkey, Lebanon, Chasity (Chad) Fouch, Burlington, Wendell Miller III, Kokomo, Sydney Prater, Kokomo, Damon Prater, Kokomo, Nicholas Miller, Bringhurst, Ronnie Copeland III, Kokomo, Michael Richey, Kokomo, and Jason Richey, Kokomo; one great-granddaughter, Alaina Gilkey, Lebanon, and one on the way; several nieces; nephews; great-nieces; and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her stepfather, Fred Benzinger.
The family would like to thank the third floor nursing staff at St. Joseph Hospital for the care that was given to Shirley.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday in Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., Kokomo. Pastor John Neuman will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kokomo. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
