Mary L. Jarrell

Nov. 27, 1917 - Feb. 7, 2014

Mary L. Jarrell, 96, Kokomo, died at 11:25 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at Century Villa Health Care, Greentown. She was born Nov. 27, 1917, in Eagle Creek near Equality, Ill., the daughter of David and Celia Catherine (Loyd) Frohock. On Feb. 22, 1941, she married Joseph Jarrell, who preceded her in death March 27, 1988.

Mary spent her life taking care of her family. She had an incredible green thumb when it came to gardening and was always sharing her harvest with family and neighbors. She was known for her home-canned sweet pickles, flaky pie crusts, and fried chicken. Her secret to making everything taste delicious was the “pinch of love” she put into each dish. She enjoyed participating in the Joy Club at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and sharing the recipes she created at the potluck dinners. Mary was also a self-taught seamstress, whipping up clothing for kids and grandkids, stuffed animals, doll clothes, and more. She had a true talent for quilting, and lovingly made many quilts by hand over the years for her family.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. David P. and Barbro Jarrell, Kokomo; daughter and son-in-law, Cecilia K. and Edward Diaz, Calumet City, Ill.; her sister and brother-in-law, Sarah Inez and Charles Amaya, Hammond; three grandchildren and their spouses, Drs. Kevin and Melissa Jarrell, Kokomo, Lisa and Steven Baker, Carmel, Christopher Diaz, San Rafael, Calif.; seven great-grandchildren, Andrew Jarrell, Elizabeth Jarrell, Michael Jarrell, Reese Baker, Ryan Baker, Sydney Baker, Carley Baker; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister, Marjorie Chaffin, and four brothers, LaRue Frohock, Lloyd Frohock, David Frohock, and William Frohock.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with Pastor Greg McGarvey officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 1 p.m. until service time on Friday. A private burial will be made in Loyd Cemetery, Eagle Creek, Ill.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Food Pantry. Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.
