Roberta June (Smith) Slack

Roberta June (Smith) Slack, 80, went to meet the Lord at 8:58 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at her home, where she had been lovingly cared for by her husband and children. She was born in Freeport, Kan., and was the daughter of Rev. Ralph and Ruth (Tromble) Smith.

She treasured her role as a mother and wife in the home, and loved to sew, garden and put up canned goods. She also served as secretary for Globe Valve, and worked as a cook for the Howard County Friendship home and at Western High School cafeteria. She served one year as Howard County extension president, and several years as the Monroe Township president.  

She and her husband pastored at Windfall, Forest, and Miami for 20 years in the Pilgrim Holiness and Wesleyan churches. She was also a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, where she taught the women’s bible study. She richly loved reading and memorizing God’s word, and dedicated her life to being a servant for God.

She is survived by two brothers, Dr. Ray (Betty) Smith, Sheridan, Wyo., and Rev. Robert (Julia) Smith, Brooksville, Fla.; three sisters, Reva (Jim) Green, Zephyr Hills, Fla., Rosaline (Jack) Blinn, Walton, and Raydene (Ronnie) Green, Summerville; her husband of 61 years, Rev. Herbert Slack; eight children, Renita and Gordon Puckett, Steven and Sheryl Slack, Verna Lynn and Keith Spaulding, Patricia and Glenn Waltman, Cheryl LaBarge, all of Kokomo, Philip and Sherri Slack, St. Joseph, Mich., Brian and Jennifer Slack, Lebanon, Ill., and Deanna and Doug Ennis, Summerville, S.C.; 20 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Church of the Nazarene, 2734 S. Washington St. Officiants will be Dr. Rev. David Leeder, Dr. Rev. Larry Freels from Macon, Ga., and Rev. Glenn Waltman from Kokomo. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
