Leslie F. ‘Les’ Cook

Nov. 13, 1921 - March 17, 2013

— Leslie F. “Les” Cook went to be with the Lord and was reunited with the love of his life at 1:03 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2013, surrounded by his loved ones in his home. He was born Nov. 13, 1921, in Kokomo, a son of Oscar F. and Nannie (Beaman) Cook. On April 4, 1945, he married Josephine M. Scardina, who preceded him in death in 2006.

Also preceding them in death were their only child, Kathleen Cook, his parents, a brother and sister.

Les graduated from high school and joined the Navy. He served as a pilot in World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and then went on to work in the architectural field for Kokomo Lumber, designing and/or building homes for over 65 years, including his own. He also taught drafting at Ivy Tech. He was a member of the Home Builders Association of Howard County, served as president of Kokomo Cancer Support Group, was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, and was a life member of the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his brother, William (Norma) Cook; niece, Lovita (Neville) Abney, Florida; grandchildren, Kristina Gonzales, Michelle Gonzales, Angelita Burgei, Micheal Gonzales, Bobby Wilson, Messina McGraw, Bill Logan and Jason Tedder, Kokomo; great-grandchildren, Ashley Gonzales, Justin Craig, Jacob Tedder, S.A. Dunn, Skydarius Stevens, Zoey Young, Jayla Gonzales and Cyleigh Miles, Kokomo; and really good friends, Becky Smith, Emma Jean Carnes and Joshua Logan.

He completely devoted his life to caring for his family and others. He loved telling stories about the war and other significant moments in his life. He was a kind, loving, accepting, trusting and hardworking man who had a great sense of humor and the ability to always look on the bright side of things. He was admired and will be missed by all who knew him.

There will be a Mass of Christian burial held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1229 N. Washington St., Kokomo, with the Rev. Tony Rowland celebrating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery, Kokomo, with military honors by the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team and the United States Navy. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., and one hour prior to the Mass at the church. A celebration of his life will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. The immediate family encourages family and friends who would like to share memories or experiences they had with Les to attend at that time. If preferred, you may write a message for a family member to read during that time.

You are invited to read Les’s obituary at www.ellersmortuary.com, where you may sign the guest book, view the tribute DVD, share a personal message, or order flowers for the family. Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., assisted the family with arrangements.
