Marilyn S. McFadden

Jan. 1, 1933 - Dec. 21, 2013

Marilyn S. McFadden, 80, Kokomo, died early Saturday morning, Dec. 21, 2013, at her home. She was born Jan. 1, 1933, in Kokomo, the daughter of Leonard John and Ruth (Howenstine) Whitacre. She married Ed Waggoner, who died shortly after their marriage. On July 12, 1964, she married James Robert McFadden, and he died Aug. 3, 1982.

Marilyn was a 1952 graduate of Kokomo High School and attended Hanover College, finishing with a master’s degree in education from Ball State Teachers College. She was a first-grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School for several years. She served as a church secretary for more than 30 years at St. John’s Lutheran Church, which later became Christ Lutheran Church, retiring in 2009.

She was an active member of First Congregational Christian Church, where she served on many boards and committees through the years. She was especially involved with the Women’s Guild and the Nearly New Shop, a mission of the church. She will be remembered by many for her hard work and “behind the scenes” efforts on behalf of many church projects and events.

She enjoyed making beautifully decorated cookies, which she shared with family and friends throughout the year and especially at Christmas.

Survivors include two sons, Scott R. McFadden and his fiancée, Donna Light, Muncie, and Kent L. McFadden and his wife, Stacy, Kokomo; sister-in-law, Margaret W. Whitacre, Kokomo; niece, Susan Bergman; and three nephews, Gary Woolley, Steve Woolley and Brad Whitacre.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; two brothers, Wayne “Bud” Whitacre and Robert Whitacre; and sister, Katherine Woolley.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, Lincoln Road Chapel, with Pastor Jon Tice officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memory Garden Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 4 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to First Congregational Church, 505 W. Mulberry St., Kokomo, IN 46901. Online condolences may be submitted at www.shirleyandstout.com.
