Theodore D. Grell Sr., 81, Gas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, in St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born Feb. 28, 1932 in Clayton, Iowa, to the late George and Marguerite (McGill) Frey. He married Janice Kavanagh on Feb. 10, 1992, and she survives.
Ted was a veteran of the United States Navy and served in the Korean War as an aviator. He spent 50 years serving the Boy Scouts of America, achieving many awards, including the Silver Beaver Award. He retired from the Kokomo Chrysler Transmission Plant. He was a member of Gas City Moose Lodge and Eastview Wesleyan Church, Gas City.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Grell, Gas City; children, Debbra (Steven) Long, Kokomo, Theresa Grell Rooney, Thomaston, Maine, John Grell, Kokomo, and Mark Grell, Hartford City; stepchildren, Kathleen (Scott) Caudell, Brownsburg, Brian (Amber) Kavanagh, Knightstown and Patrick (Kasey) Kavanagh, Brownsburg; sister, LaDonna Specht, Cherokee, Iowa; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and cats, Tom, Bobby, Rascal and Charlie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Marguerite Frey; four brothers; and children, Theodore D. Grell Jr., Jacqueline Thomas and David Scott Grell.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Eastview Wesleyan Church, 414 N. 10th St., Gas City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Mark Atkinson officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Marion National Cemetery, Marion.
