Janet Marie Shaner

Aug. 10, 1936 - Dec. 10, 2012

— Janet Marie (Epeards) Shaner, 76, went home to Heaven Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at her residence, Miller’s Merry’ Manor West in Wabash, surrounded by her children after a very long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. She was born Aug. 10, 1936, in Indianapolis, the daughter of Amzi and Strausie (Weaver) Epeards. She married Ronald Marion Shaner Sept. 4, 1954.

Janet was pastor’s wife, homemaker and mother to her own five children, plus gave selflessly to the nurturing, care and mentoring of dozens of additional children throughout her adult life as a day care provider. She also was a foster parent to 33 additional children over a 12-year period, the last of which was a special needs toddler. She was a life-long member of the Nazarene Church and served in countless ways behind the scenes as the pastor’s wife throughout her marriage to Ron, most recently at the First Church of the Nazarene in Peru, where her husband retired as pastor in 1997 after 20 years of service. She played the piano, loved to paint, build, sew, make crafts, ceramics, knit, crochet, decorate and re-arrange furniture. She was extremely creative. She always owned her own tool box and wasn’t afraid to try fixing anything. She will always be remembered for her quiet spirit, strong will, giving heart and unique sense of humor.

She is survived by her husband who still resides at Miller’s Merry Manor West in Wabash; her five children, Garry (Deb) Shaner, Dewitt, Va., Sherry (Dave) Parmer, Edmond, Okla., Terri (James) Sprunger, Wabash, Jerry (Barb) Shaner, Galien, Mich., and Perry (Melissa) Shaner, Waterloo, Mich.; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and a half brother, Rusty Epeards.

She was preceded in death by her father; mother; brother, William Epeards; two additional brothers who died in infancy; and one grandchild, Trevor Shaner.

A private service given by Pastor Ken Goble was held at Janet’s bedside with immediate family. Janet donated her body for research at IU Medical Center. Her cremains will be interred at a later date in Memorial Gardens in Wabash.
