Charles R. “Dick” Hardy, 87, Kokomo, passed away at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at St. Joseph Hospital. Dick was born Feb. 6, 1926, in Kokomo to the late Joseph Jr. Hardy and Eula Hardy (Carter).
He was a Kokomo High School graduate, was in the U.S. Marines during the World War II and the Korean Conflict. He then was a correctional officer for the State of Michigan Correctional Office. In 1997, he retired after working 30 years as a corrections officer. He also worked as a mortician and a draftsman. In 2007, Dick moved back to Kokomo. Dick enjoyed watching westerns, college basketball and football. The joy of his life was his great-grandchildren, who visited him regularly.
Survivors include a son, Mark Hardy; a daughter, Celestine Johnson (Daro); five grandchildren, Lamont Hardy, Carrie Hardy, Marisa Cooper, Tahisia Williams and Dara Johnson; 10 great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bennett Hardy; and a sister, Barbara Matthews.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Monday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St. Services will follow at noon, also at the mortuary, with Pastor Louis Parham officiating. Burial will be in Crown Point Cemetery. There will be full military rites performed by the U.S. Marines and the Kokomo Military Rites team at the cemetery.
