William ‘Bill’ A. Nilson

Dec. 7, 1929 - April 4, 2013

— William “Bill” A. Nilson, 83, Kokomo, passed away at 1:11 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, at St. Joseph Hospital. He was born Dec. 7, 1929, in Bedford, to the late Roy and Edith (Tanksley) Nilson. On July 29, 1951, in Bedford, Bill married Martha M. (Kennedy) Nilson. Martha survives.

Bill was a 1948 graduate of Bedford High School. Shortly after graduation he joined the United States Army, where he proudly served from 1951 to 1953. After his military duties, he began working for General Motors. He worked for GM for 30 years until retiring in 1991. Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf and woodworking. But most of all he thoroughly enjoyed his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. Bill was a member of the American Legion, and the UAW 272.

Survivors include his wife, Martha M. Nilson; two sons, Kenneth (Brenda) Nilson, Canton, Mich., and Donald (Cynthia) Nilson, Fort Worth, Texas; grandchildren, Sandra Renauer, Michelle (Eddie) Lindow, Bradley (Jacqueline) Nilson, Stephanie Nilson, Melissa Nilson and fiance Rob Viera; great-grandchildren, Elyse Renauer, Gabriel Renauer and Lucas Nilson; one brother, Edward Nilson, Bedford; and best friends, Mary and Shorty Smale, Bedford.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, John Nilson.  

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., with Dr. Gary Carpenter and Pastor Michael Greenwood officiating. Burial with military rites provided by the United States Army and the local VFW Military Rites Team will follow in Albright Cemetery, Kokomo. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
