Jimmie “Jim” D. Barton, 80, Sharpsville, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Northwoods Village. He was born July 17, 1932, in Muncie to the late James Wesley and Charlene Marie (Jacobs) Barton. On June 17, 1956, in Converse, he married Christine A. (Coppock), and she survives.
He graduated from Converse High School in 1950. He then served in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict for four years. Jim retired from Delco Electronics.
Jim was a 3rd Degree Master Mason, he was a 50-year member of the Converse Masonic Lodge No. 601 and a member of UAW Local 685. He was a past member of the SCCA and was the past commander of the American Legion, Sharpsville.
Jim was very artistic and loved to invent things, he enjoyed playing the accordion and was associated with the circus in his younger years.
Surviving are his wife, Chris A. Barton, Sharpsville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Michelle Coy, Indianapolis, and Stephanie and Todd Smith, Kokomo; three grandchildren, Brandon Grimes, Indianapolis, Jordan Grimes, Kokomo, and Alejandro Coy, Indianapolis; and two great-grandchildren, Skylar Grimes and Jaydon Grimes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Brent Barton; and a brother, Jack Barton.
Funeral services for Jim will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street, 3400 S. Webster St., with Pastor Keith Cramer officiating. Burial will follow in Sharpsville Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the VFW military rites team. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the mortuary, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to Guardian Angel Hospice, with envelopes provided at the mortuary.
