Dennis Leo Schulte and Judith Kay (Dwyer) Schulte

Judy Schulte Feb. 1, 1945 - March 25, 2013 and Dennis Schulte Aug. 17, 1946 - March 25, 2013

In Loving Memory of Judy and Dennis Schulte

Dennis Leo Schulte, 66, and Judith Kay (Dwyer) Schulte, 68, of both Kokomo and Seattle, Wash., died Monday, March 25, 2013, in Seattle, Wash.

Dennis was born Aug. 17, 1946 in Reed City, Mich., to Ralph and Evelyn “Jackie” Schulte. He graduated from Mesquite High School, Mesquite, Texas in 1965.

Dennis served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1970. He received his basic training at Fort Polk, La., where he also completed his Advanced Infantry Training. In 1967, Dennis was deployed to Vietnam as a supply sergeant. He extended the normal 18-month tour of duty to an additional 22 months so that his brothers, John and Paul, who were also serving in the military, would not have to go to Vietnam. Dennis completed his service honorably as supply staff sergeant at Fort Hood, Texas.

Dennis and Judy were married at St. Patrick Church in Kokomo, on June 25, 1971, after both of their mothers conspired to have Judy and Dennis “accidentally” meet each other.

Dennis graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1973 and completed his Masters Degree in Mathematics at Purdue University in 1980. From 1973 to 2006, Dennis taught math at Western High School, Russiaville, where he was known for hosting weekly “Game Days” in his classroom. He coached both football and wrestling. He was not only a coach, but a lifetime mentor to those students that he taught and coached. He remained in touch with many. He was a favorite, adored by his students and will be missed by his students and co-workers. Uncle Dennis also shared his wrestling skills with his nephews and great-nephews. They call him lovingly, “The Wrestling Guy.” Dennis’ proudest coaching moments were those that he spent coaching his son, Dan.

More than just a football fan, 25 years ago Dennis and friend Jeff Hunt founded SHAFT (Schulte Hunt Association of Football Teams.) Dennis served the entire 25 years as commissioner. This was the first Fantasy Football League in Howard County and the second league formed in the United States. Dennis loved and studied sports thoroughly. If asked who played shortstop on a baseball team in 1934, Denny would know. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs and Detroit Red Wings fan. He also enjoyed reading mysteries and studying history.
