Richard C. Fretz, M.D., 84, Kokomo, passed away at 12 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Community Howard Regional Health. He was born June 22, 1929, to Hillard C. and Mary Ruth (Showalter) Fretz. On Jan. 5, 1973, at Grace United Methodist Church, he married Bonita “Bonnie” J. (Paul) Fretz, who survives.
Richard was a 1947 graduate of Kokomo High School. He earned his bachelor of science degree from Indiana University in 1951 and his doctor of medicine from Indiana University in 1955. He performed his internship at Lima Memorial Hospital in 1956. Richard served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve in 1955 and the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1958.
For 50 years he practiced private family medicine in Kokomo. He served at the Sycamore Primary Group, Kokomo, and the Logansport Regional Cancer Center, Logansport. Richard’s professional memberships included the American Board of Family Medicine, American Academy of Family Medicine, American Medical Association, Phi Ro Sigma Professional Fraternity, a lifetime member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, member of the Howard County Medical Association, member of the Indiana State Medical Association. He was also a member of Grace United Methodist Church, American Contract Bridge League, and a lifetime member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Kokomo. Richard enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge and cribbage, reading, fishing, and was an avid IU, Pacers and Colts fan.
Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Fretz; daughter, Leslie Ann (Norman) Carter, Greentown, Amy Marie Fretz, Iowa City, Iowa; grandchildren, Michelle Ann (Donald) Andrews, Matthew Edward (Candice) Carter, Michael Alan (Jamie) Carter and Johnathan Edward Ferguson; great-grandchildren, Lucy Grace Carter, Lily Faith Carter, Luke Elijah Carter, Lorelei Elise Andrews and Everett Ryan Andrews; sister, Barbara Ruth (Dan) Bourff, Kokomo; brother, Jack Leroy (Gail) Fretz, Palm Coast, Fla., along with several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanette L. Hahn; daughter, Heidi L. Ferguson; and granddaughter, Emily Marie Ferguson.
