Robert M. Hensley, 87, passed away at 7:24 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at his home in Galveston. He was born the son of John and Maudie (Alexander) Hensley on June 27, 1926, in Cass County. On March 19, 1947, he married Iris (Fisher), and she preceded him in death on Sept. 10, 1970. On Jan. 12, 1972, he married M. Jean Hayes, who worked hand-in-hand together with him in their farming operation, and she survives him.
Robert was a 1945 graduate of Ervin Township High School and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army. He was self-employed as a farmer throughout his life until retiring in 1994. His memberships included Upper Deer Creek Church, Young America Lion’s Club, Burlington F & AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and the Shriners. Robert was a master mason, who believed in honesty and hard work.
He enjoyed square dancing, playing euchre, working in his woodshop, mushroom hunting, and country and gospel music, especially the Gaither family. Robert was a people person; he loved to gather with his friends for morning coffee and help with Lions Club stands and events at the county fairs. He always had a quarter to give a child and enjoyed spending time with young people. He will be remembered for having a smile, wave, and handshake for everyone and will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He enjoyed sports and liked the Indy 500, baseball, I.U. basketball, and pheasant hunting.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jean Hensley; children, Marilyn McGee, Kokomo, June (Larry) Piercy, Mesa, Ariz., Melanie (David) Galvin, Everett, Wash., Alan (Sarah) Dillman, Saluda, N.C.; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kathleen (Charles) Cripe. He had a host of friends whom he loved and cherished like family.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Vera Hensley, Evelyn Rinehart, and Richard Hensley.
