Kathryn Ann “Kay” Salgat, 74, Kokomo, passed away at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013 at her home. She was born May 1, 1939, in Flint, Mich., to the late William and Elizabeth (Roloff) O’Brien. On July 11, 1959, she was married to James Salgat, who preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1984.
Kay was a 1957 graduate of St. Agnes High School. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Rosary Sodality, St. Patrick’s School Bus Association, Parents without Partners, and Breakaway Bicycle Club; as well as a volunteer with Howard County Right to Life. Skiing, bicycling, camping and canoeing were among her many hobbies and interests.
She is survived by her children, Karen (Mike) Hatfield, Tony Salgat, Jeannette (David Sr.) Custodio, Doug Salgat, and Andrew (Vanessa) Salgat; grandchildren, Rachael Pettiford, Jaqueline Pettiford, Sgt. Dewayne (Megan) Pettiford II, Charles (fiancee Tiffany Auker) Pettiford, Keshia Salgat, Erin Salgat, James Custodio, Elizabeth Custodio, Helen Custodio, Annie Custodio, David “Dayo” Custodio Jr., Paul Custodio, Mary Custodio, Tom Custodio, Katie Salgat, Abbey Salgat, Kristi Coulbern, Easton Coulbern, Jacob Coulbern, Lacy Salgat and Bryce Salgat; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Pat Welch, Mary Andrykovich, Dan (Brenda) O’Brien, Janet Keck, and Cheryl (Michael) McGaffigan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers, Edward and Jack O’Brien.
The family is eternally grateful for the dedicated care given by Kay’s sister, Pat Welch, niece Ann Welch as well as Patsy, Carla, Jenny, and Julie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1229 N. Washington St., with Rev. Frs. Michael McKinley and Anthony Rowland the celebrants. A graveside service will follow in New Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Flint, Mich., on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 West Lincoln Road, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.
