Madonna Rose Mullen Shutt, 79, Bloomington, formerly of Kokomo, died at 7:40 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at IU Health Hospice House in Bloomington. She was born Jan. 5, 1934, in Kokomo to Daily Conrad and Nellie Maria Fenn Mullen, both deceased. She was married Jan. 5, 1952, to Bruce. T. Shutt. They divorced May 23, 1983.
She graduated from Kokomo High School in June 1951, graduated from Indiana University, School of Continuing Studies, Bloomington, received an AA in 1985 and a bachelor’s degree in general studies in 1993 with honors and earned a certificate in gerontology in 1993.
She was a lifelong member of the Indiana University Alumni Association and was active in the IU Alumni Association and the School of Continuing Studies, serving as IU Bloomington representative, 1985-87; vice president in 1987-89; and president 1989-92 (two terms as president). She served as representative of the School of Continuing Studies on the Indiana University Alumni Executive Council from 1991 to 1997. She received the Senior Achievement Award from the Honors Division Scholarship Committee of Indiana University and the Trustees of Indiana University.
She was a member of the board of the Aeon Society, adviser board to the president of the University. She was a member or the Golden Key National Honorary Society and a member of St. Mark’s Methodist Church, Bloomington.
She was an avid researcher and family historian for the Mullen family genealogy. She co-authored the Mize Family Genealogy book with Dr. Jesse Mize (deceased), Athens, Ga.
She worked for Indiana University in several different departments, retiring in May 1999 after 31 years. She worked the last 14 years as administrative secretary to the director of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety, Bloomington campus.
She leaves behind a sister, Mrs. Betty Jo Hackenbracht, Greentown, and husband, Kenneth; a brother, Max E. Mullen, Kokomo; one niece, Cynthia Mullen, Arcadia; nephews, Steven Mullen, Marion, Roger Wyrick and wife Marsha, Marietta, Ga., and Dennis Wyrick and wife Marci, Pagosa Springs, Colo.; great-nieces, Macy and Madison Mullen, Arcadia; Jennifer Wyrick, Marietta, Ga.; great-nephews, Ryan Mullen, Marion, and Eric Mullen, Jacksonville, Fla., and Jason Wyrick, Marietta, Ga.; and her friend and companion of many years, Gary Arnold, Bloomington.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with the Rev. Becky Sundquist officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit from 1 p.m. until service time.
