Phillip “Phil” E. Fernung, 70, Kokomo, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Fairmont Rehabilitation Center in Kokomo. He was born March 5, 1944, to Ernest and Madella (Sellers) Fernung in Kokomo.
Phil grew up on a farm, and deeply respected both the farm and entrepreneurial ways of life. After graduating from Western High School in 1962 and attending Ball State University, Phil returned to his farming roots to own and operate Markland Home & Garden, and later Den-Ray’s Garden Center & Landscaping on Center Road, for over 25 years. He was also the manager of the Maple Crest Shopping Center Christmas Tree Lot for his good friend, Dallas Thomas, for over 20 years, and later in life made many acquaintances by operating produce stands in the Kokomo area. Phil loved entertaining others, and hosted an annual party for his employees and friends for many summers. Those who knew Phil best will remember his strong will, generous nature, playful bantering, and infectious laugh.
Phil is survived by his brother, Denny; niece, Rachel (Steve); nephew, Andy (Melissa); niece, Alisha Boone (Brett); great-nieces, Faith and Molly; and “grandson,” Tyler.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved canine friend, Half Pint.
Phil had requested that his body be cremated, and per his wishes there will be no visitation. The family asks that you remember Phil with fond memories of his sense of humor, love of life, and many friendships.
