Charles William “Shorty” Payne, 92, Kokomo, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, March 13, 2013. He was born May 30, 1920, in Allensville, Ky., a son of Benjamin Payne and Bennie (White) Payne.
He was a member of Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church. He retired from Continental Steel Mill after 30 years of service.
Charles graduated from Kokomo High School. In 1939, he attended Mississippi Industrial College in Holy Spring, Miss., where he learned to box and was certified. He was also a member of the football team. He played baseball in Kokomo in the late 1940s for a popular African-American team called the Kokomo Advertiser’s. Charles was an avid card player. He will be missed by his family.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret L. (Collier); son, James Nelson Payne; two daughters, Rita A. (Payne) Twitty and Shelia A. (Payne) Kenner; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Phillip A. Payne; and a son, Charles Phillip Payne.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wayman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Pastor Louis Parham will be the officiant and eulogist. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service Monday. Burial will be in Crown Point Cemetery.
