Leon S. Allen, 84, Bunker Hill, died at 3:45 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Century Villa Healthcare in Greentown. He was born March 8, 1929 in Wheeler, Mich., the son of Loren H. and Velma M. (Thomas) Allen. On June 19, 1960, he married Phoebe Jane (Poff) and she survives him.
Leon graduated from St. Louis, Mich., High School in 1948. He started working as an apprentice Jan. 1, 1947 at Crandall Funeral Home, while still in high school. He went on to graduate from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science in Indianapolis in 1950, and was licensed as a funeral director and embalmer Oct. 3, 1950. He served his apprenticeship at Jordan Funeral Home in Indianapolis starting in 1948, and continued working there until 1953.
On June 9, 1951, he was inducted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He graduated April 26, 1952 from the U.S. Army Quartermaster School of Graves Registration at Fort Lee, Va. He served as NCOIC of the 293rd Quartermaster 8th U.S. Army Mortuary near Seoul, Korea from 1952 to 1953.
Leon purchased the former Glazier Funeral Home in Bunker Hill in January 1955, and opened the business April 7, 1955. He operated the Allen Funeral Home for 39 years with the assistance of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loren Allen, and later his stepmother, Iva Allen, his wife, Phoebe Jane (Poff) Allen, his daughter, Linda Talbert, and granddaughter, Amanda Watson. On Dec. 31, 1993, he merged with Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home in Peru.
He was past president of the Bunker Hill Businessmen’s Association, held various offices in the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church, Pipe Creek Township Fire Department, was past district director of the Indiana Funeral Directors Association and served many years on the Awards Committee of the IFDA.
At the time of his death, his memberships included: Bunker Hill Methodist Church, Bunker Hill Lodge 683 F & AM (was a member since 1950), Scottish Rite Valley of Ft. Wayne, Bunker Hill and Walton Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, James Reece Post 1122 VFW (charter member), life member of Peru VFW post, Miami County Historical Society, Indiana Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association, Northwest Indiana Carriage & Sleigh Association, Professional Car Society of the U. S. (Indiana Chapter), Board of Directors of the Springdale Cemetery Association (Secretary Treasurer 1956 to 2000), and the Indiana State Troopers Association.
