Dale Russell Armfield

May 29, 1924 - Feb. 3, 2013

— Dale Russell Armfield, 88, Kokomo, went to be with the Lord at 12:14 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, from Waterford Place Health Center, Kokomo. He was born May 29, 1924, in Howard County, to Russell and Ella (Fenn) Armfield. On Nov. 24, 1943, he married Mariruth Fouch in Elwood.

Dale was a longtime Taylor Township farmer and worked at Chrysler Corp. Dale was a member of Fairfield Christian Church, Center Naphtali Masonic Lodge, Continental Chapter of the Indiana Society Muncie Chapter Sons of the American Revolution. Dale was a 1940 graduate of Summitville High School. His favorite pastimes were reading, sketching and enjoying time with his family.

Genealogy was important to him. He researched his family roots and traced his family from Howard County to North Carolina to England and Sweden. The best legacy he gave to his wife and family was giving 100 percent of his love, time and respect.

Dale felt one of his greatest honors was having the family’s 1909 red round barn moved and restored to the Howard County 4-H Fairgrounds, Greentown. The dedication July 9, 2012, to the community and seeing the sign Armfield-Moyer above the barn door were special to him. A story Dale related to the family was that his grandfather and the barn’s builder, Lawrence Armfield, asked Dale what would happen to the round barn after Dale retired from farming. Dale informed him, “Don’t worry, it will be a landmark for the community.”

Survivors include his wife, Mariruth Armfield; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Phillip Knight, Kokomo, Susan and Max Ammerman, Kokomo, and Brenda and Brad Rogers, Kokomo; son, Roger Armfield, Kokomo; one sister-in-law, Juanita Benton; four grandchildren, Aaron Knight (Michelle), Mindy George (Shane Smith), Traci Azato (Dennis) and Jessica Rogers. Dale is survived by 12 great-grandchildren, Cali George, Mikaela Knight, Alex Knight, Nathanael Knight, Allysson George, Aiden Azato, Lara George, Evan Azato, Ryan Azato, Iziah George, Darien Smith and Tyler Smith; and one great-great granddaughter, Victoria Blackburn.

A special thank-you to the loving caregivers in Dale’s life: Theresa, Vivian, Claire, Elizabeth (Beth), Susie, Barbara, Tracey, Heather, Olivia, Lyndsey, Linda, April, Nikita, Elizabeth C., Amiee, Karah, Maddie Marie, Elaine and Ivan, our wonderful carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Gene Fouch; and best friend, William Benton.

Funeral services celebrating Dale’s life will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Pastor Keith Cramer officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery. Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. A Masonic memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. and The Continental Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution will have a color guard between 6 and 8 p.m. today.

Memorial contributions may be made in Dale’s memory to Fairfield Christian Church and Greentown Lions Club Armfield-Moyer Round Barn. Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.
