Robert S. Heitman, 93, Kokomo, passed away at 2:55 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Fairmont Health and Rehab Center. Robert was born July 16, 1920, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Elmer H. and Dorathy C. (Stemler) Heitman. His marriage to the late Kathern D. Michael was Sept. 6, 1947.
Robert was a World War II Navy Merchant Marine veteran. He graduated from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy, Great Neck Long Island, N.Y., and served on seven cargo vessels across the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and North and Black Seas until 1946. He was a self-taught carpenter and retired after 20 years in the Civil Service from Grissom Air Force Base. He was a member of American Legion Post 6, Moose Lodge 179, UCT Council 494, LINY former member of Tipton Lodge 33, and AF & AM of Logansport. He enjoyed model railroads and woodworking, but most of all he loved entertaining the grandchildren.
Survivors include his son, James E. Martin (Margaret), Canton, Ga.; his daughter, Kathy L. Wyrick (William), Converse; grandchildren, Toby Martin, Shelby Walters, Brian Wyrick and Geoffrey Wyrick; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews; and two special people in his life, Katie Harter and Barbara Gilliand, both of Kokomo.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathern D. Heitman; and two brothers, Norman S. Heitman and Donald S. Heitman.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery, with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy and the Kokomo military rites team. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
