Ollie Mae (Gamblin) Shackelford, 95, Kokomo, passed away at 10:05 p.m. Monday, June 9, 2014, at Caring Hands Healthcare, Peru. She was born Feb. 16, 1919 in Lumpkin County, Georgia, to the late Nathaniel and Martha (Stover) Gamblin.
Ollie graduated from Forest High School in Forest, being number one in her class. On Aug. 10, 1940, Ollie married Everett Shackelford, and he preceded her in death Feb. 15, 1997. She enjoyed the simple things in life: her flowers, birds and squirrels. Ollie was a loving mother, caring grandmother and never met a stranger. She was a past member of the Eagles Women’s Auxiliary, where she participated in bowling. Ollie was an elegant lady that loved music and dancing.
Ollie is survived by her son, Ralph (Susan) Shackelford; daughters, Janet Kirby, Judy (Ken) Damewood, Florida, Diane Shackelford, Bettie (Lowell) Burton, California, Bonnie Atkisson, Florida, and Kathleen Shackelford, California; grandchildren, Scott (Kim) Kirby, Brian Shackelford, Chad (Tausha) Shackelford, Stephanie (Steve) Bankston, Jennifer (Steve) Henderson, Jessica Pruett, Troy (Paige) Edwards, Rachelle (Joshua) Chance, Benjamin Edwards, Eric (Alanna) Wilson, Michael (Christine) Atkisson, Christina Atkisson, Nicole (Tyler) Robarge, Heidi (Brigham) Craun and Jesse Maldonado; stepgrandchildren, Richard (Brenda) Goshern, Steve (Erica) Goshern, Johnny (Monica) Myers, Travis Myers and Brad McCallester; 43 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Ollie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Everett Shackelford; son-in-law, Steve Atkisson; brothers, Daniel, Paul, Claud and Raymond Gamblin; and sisters, Madge Grogan and Marie Wisehart.
There will be a funeral service for Ollie at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., with Pastor Lynn Coleman officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery, Kokomo. All of Ollie’s friends and family are welcome to join together for a time of visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, also at the mortuary.
