James E. “Fred” Moreland, 82, Miami, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord early Friday morning, June 6, 2014, at St. Joseph Hospital in Kokomo. He was born Oct. 23, 1931 in Albany, Kentucky, to Emmaline (Milton) and Taft Moreland. On July 30, 1956, he married Betty J. Gregory, and she survives.
Fred retired from Chrysler in 1988 with 30 years of service. He also worked for UAP Richter Crop Maker Soil Service and assisted Purdue University with test plots and dairy cows.
He was a member of UAW Local 685, and he enjoyed traveling and telling stories to his family and the friends he met with his produce market at the McClure Station.
Surviving family include his wife, Betty J. Moreland, Miami; three daughters, Laura and John Loudy, Winchester, Clandra and Larry Scott, Logansport, and Beth Riggle, Galveston; four sons, Curt Hamby, Bringhurst, David Hamby, Miami, James Moreland Jr., Miami, and Joseph Moreland, Kentucky; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Huston, Kentucky.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert Taft Moreland; one daughter, Jimmy Pauline Moreland; one sister, Sally Givens; and one brother, Junior Moreland.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston, with Pastor Garfield Judkins officiating. Burial will follow in Springdale Cemetery in Bunker Hill. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston.
