Joe B. Smith, 84, Springville, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at his residence. Born July 8, 1928, in Howard County, he was the son of Joseph B. Smith Sr. and Lucie Mae (Lidy) Smith.
Joe was raised in Deming, N.M. He rode fence lines for ranchers, helped gather cattle, did some rodeo, was a member of the sheriff’s posse and trained horses. He worked for Ralph Rogers as a heavy equipment operator, was a lifelong cattle farmer and entrepreneur extraordinaire.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, a member of the Deming Old Timers Association, the Cincinnati Christian Church, Solsberry American Legion Post 450, the Operating Engineers Union 841 and the Crossroads coffee club.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Judy Smith, Springville; two daughters, Jeri Mae Whaley (Don), Springville, and Jayne Lea Scott (Raymond), Bloomfield; four grandchildren, Jerrod Whaley, Bloomington, J. Heath Whaley, Springville, Alysia McIntosh (Josh), Bloomfield, and Austin Scott, Bloomfield; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Whaley and Mazie Jayne McIntosh; one sister, JoeAnn Tidwell, Deming, N.M.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Ida Mills, Lucy Margaret Crawford, Mary Louise Rambo, Colleen Hargrove; five brothers-in-law and his mother-in-law, Mabel (Ironmonger) Manning.
Friends may call at the Cincinnati Christian Church from 2 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. Saturday until the hour of service. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cincinnati Christian Church, with the Rev. Tony Stinson officiating. Burial will follow at Dishamn Cemetery.
