Sherman C. Shelby Jr., 84, Kokomo, passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at his home. He was born Dec. 2, 1928, in Kokomo, to Sherman and Eva (Dickey) Shelby Sr. On April 24, 1949, he married Betty Jean (Sweigart) Shelby, and she preceded him in death on March 18, 2004.
He worked as a mechanic at Libby, McNeill & Libby from 1962 to 1985 and later for Nestle Beverage Co., where he retired in 1994. He was a fix-it-up kind of guy who enjoyed fishing and helping friends and family.
He is survived by his children, Sherman “Butch” Shelby III and wife Ann, Lawrenceville, Ga., Vickie Francis and husband David, Coral Springs, Fla., Allen Shelby and wife Josephine, Kokomo, Lynn Brown, Peru, and John Shelby and wife Terrie, Rushville; sisters, Erelene Strange, Kokomo, and Janie Spice, Fort Wayne; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clifford Shelby Sr. and George Shelby; and sisters, Rita Rubow and Sue Leisure.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home, with Pastor Ron Forsythe officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
