Max J. Grist Jr., 69, Monticello, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at IU Arnett Hospital of Lafayette. He was born Feb. 8, 1944, in Kokomo, to the late Max J. and Velma (Belt) Grist Sr.
Max attended Kokomo High School and joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving four years during the Vietnam era. He joined the Indiana Army National Guard, serving as a recruiter and later as supply sergeant. He served 30 years total in the military.
Max was a faith-filled man, a strong Christian and had a deep personal relationship with his Lord Jesus Christ throughout his life.
Surviving are daughters, Kelly (Christopher) Ottinger, Scottsburg, and Megan “Meg” Grist, Monticello; sons, Andrew M. “Andy” (wife, Alicia) Grist, Denver, and Jacob M. Grist, Monticello; fiancee, Vola Wells, Commerce, Ga.; grandchildren, Austin, Rider, Lucas, Max, Eli, Coleman, Cabella and Blaine; sisters, Sue (Steve) Wright and Sharon Miller, both of Monticello.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. July 16, 2013, at the Miller-Roscka Funeral Home, Monticello, with a rosary service at 4 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Our Lady of The Lakes Catholic Church, Monticello. Burial with full military rites will be at 2:30 p.m. July 17, 2013, at Shiloh Cemetery, Kokomo.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
