Gertrude Stitts, 86, Kokomo, passed away Friday, July 12, 2013, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Gertrude Stitts was born May 8, 1927, the daughter of Wash Hill and Minnie Lee Franklin in Montgomery, Ala.
She worked in various positions as a domestic worker, and at Long’s cleaners and was a cook for several restaurants, including I & N Restaurant. She was a longtime member of Second Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, L.C. Stitts; sons, Ira L. Howard, Peru, and William E. Howard (Patricia), Indianapolis; daughters, Betty Matthews (Elder Kenneth), Aurora, Colo., and Rose Miles, Kokomo; stepdaughters, Pamela Harris, Patrice Smith (Jesse Jr.) and Phyllis Wiggins (Hollice), all of Norfolk, Va.; brothers, Joseph McCain, Marion, and Willie Keys (Vanessa), O’Fallon, Ill.; sisters, Mary Deane (Ronald), Rosie Franklin, Dorothy Keys, Clara Phillips, all of Indianapolis, and Corene Gaulden, Fort Wayne; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Second Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Robert A. Lee will be the officiant and eulogist. Friends may call from 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Marion National Cemetery.
