Mary “Jane” Smith, 75, Kokomo, passed away at 10:35 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013, in Community Howard Regional Health. Born July 18, 1937, in Princeton, she was the daughter of the late Ermal Raibourn and Helen (Downey) Raibourn. On Aug. 31, 1958, in Bloomington, she married Jackie L. “Jack” Smith, and he survives.
She was a 1955 graduate of Anacostia High School in Washington D.C., a 1959 graduate of Indiana University Bloomington, then received her master’s degree from Ball State University. She was a homemaker and a health/physical education teacher at Elwood Haynes and Fairmount High School. She enjoyed aerobic classes and also led aerobic classes. She was an Indy car fan, loved sports, genealogy, and was an accomplished seamstress. She also loved traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Jackie L. “Jack” Smith, Kokomo; two daughters, Jolene Dee (husband Keith) Murray, Whiteville, N.C., and Julia Leigh (husband Steve) Shaffer, Valrico, Fla.; one brother, Downey Dee Raibourn, Arizona; and five grandchildren, Jourdain, Maleah, Morgan, Noah, and Hannah.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St. Pastor Dale Bliss will officiate. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Community Howard Regional Oncology Department, 3500 S. Lafountain St., Kokomo, IN 46902; or to the American Cancer Society.
