Raymond “Ray” Bunce, 84, Kokomo, went to Heaven at 5 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2013, from Community Howard Regional Health System. He was born Sept. 29, 1928, in Indianapolis, the son of Oscar Burnett and Phoeba Viola (Gorman) Bunce. On Sept. 12, 1948 in Kokomo, he married Betty Jean (Tinder) Bunce, and she survives.
Ray was a January 1946 graduate of Indianapolis Technical High School and attended Purdue University. He was employed as a millwright with General Motors, retiring in 1997. He taught health and safety training for the last 12 years. He had also taught at Taylor and Western high schools. Ray loved cars. He had worked as parts and service manager for local auto dealerships, and owned and operated Bunce Auto Salvage. He also sponsored several race cars at the Kokomo Speedway.
Ray was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Kokomo and was a dedicated volunteer, serving as Deacon, teaching Sunday school and AWANA, and singing in the church choir. He was a member of UAW local 292, was Cub Master of the West Middleton Cub Pack, coached the Coca-Cola Hustlers girls’ softball team, and was active in PTA and Band Parents at Western Schools. He enjoyed bowling, playing and watching sports, and NASCAR racing. Dale Earnhardt was his driver.
In addition to his wife, Ray is survived by three daughters, Janet E. Bunce, Kokomo, Linda C. Bunce, Kokomo, Marsha K. Graves and husband, Dale, Archdale, N.C.; five sons, Gary L. Bunce and wife, Kelly, Kokomo, Jeffrey W. Bunce and wife, Debbie, Kokomo, Phillip R. Bunce and wife, Lynda, Kokomo, Dennis M. Bunce and wife, Sue, Panama City, Fla., and David A. Bunce and wife, Debbie, Cadiz, Ky.; 15 grandchildren, Christopher Bunce, Nicholas (Cindy) Bunce, Kyle Bunce, Steven (Marci) Bunce, Richard (Bobbie) Bunce, Benjamin (Sally) Bunce, Joshua (Sarah) Bunce, Jordan Bunce, Megan Bunce, Jeremy (Ashley) Bunce, Sara (Ben) Coburn, Janelle (Patrick) Burns, John (Michelle) Richardson, Michelle Graves and Kelly Graves; 27 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dolores Schwab, Indianapolis; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Florence Evans, Barbara Crittenden and Rose Lynn Milli; and one brother, Roland Bunce.
Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bible Baptist Church, 2635 S. Dixon Road, Kokomo, with Pastors Bill Carmichael and Keith Treadway officiating. Burial will follow in Crown Point Cemetery. Friends may call on the family from 2 to 4 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church.
