Sheri Ann Scott

Nov. 5, 1956 - Jan. 22, 2013

— Sheri Ann Scott, 56, Kokomo, made her transition to Heaven at 8:31 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013. She was born Nov. 5, 1956, in Detroit, Mich., to the union of the late Solomon Cozell Smith and Lora Lee (Meredith) Smith.

She was educated in the Detroit public school system and graduated from Cooley High School in 1974. She attended Wayne Community College and later served active duty in the U.S. Army from 1983 to 1986, with an honorable discharge.

Sheri made that grand and noble confession and was baptized into the Church of Christ in 1979. While on active duty military status, Sheri and Hardy Scott met, fell in love, and were united in holy matrimony on Feb. 14, 1986, in Toledo, Ohio. To this union one son was born, Brandon Cozell Scott, on Sept. 9, 1992. After Hardy’s military retirement, the family relocated and settled into their beautiful home located here in Kokomo.

Sheri was employed by General Motors Detroit Diesel after high school. She was later employed with Family Services of Howard County. But, her greatest joy was being employed by Center Road Church of Christ as an assistant preschool teacher. She often spoke very highly of her students and would even refer to them as her children. In return for her caring love, the children adored her, too. Sheri volunteered service with Senior Citizens Golden Agers every week and supported various communities and youth group projects.

Sheri enjoyed traveling to such places as Budapest, Paris and other European countries. She also loved watching professional and college football, bowling, listening to good music, shopping and cooking. She was a champ at preparing a pot of candied yams and making her famous sweet potato pies and pound cakes. She enjoyed saying, “What goes on the lips, goes on the hips.” Just like her mom, she enjoyed a good pot of turnip greens, onion and hot water cornbread. To us, Sheri was the best smelling woman on her block. She always smelled just lovely. She loved shopping, traveling and visited her family every chance she could. We will miss our SISTER.

Sheri leaves to cherish her memories her devoted and loving husband, Hardy; loving son, Brandon, who resides at Indiana University Bloomington; five sisters, Gwendolyn Hill and Valerie Thompson, of Southfield, Mich., Ruth Maclin Tyson, Kokomo, Lorene Jordan, Jeffersonville, and Brenda Davis, Atlanta, Ga.; two loving brothers, Billy Jo Player, Talladega, Ala., and Benjamin Johnson, Southfield, Mich.; a loving aunt, Elizabeth Thomas, Detroit, Mich., affectionately known as “Auntie Liz”; two loving lifelong friends, Venecia Adams, Detroit, Mich., and Sharon Gill, Columbus, Ga.; also a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Cozell; her mother, Lora Lee; brother, Jerry; sister, Nellie Faye-Smith Player; aunt, Beatrice; nephew, Mykol; and great-nephew, Taris.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in Center Road Church of Christ, 899 W. 300 South, Kokomo. Lynn Brust will officiate. Military rites by the U.S. Army and the Kokomo Military Rites Team will follow at the church. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., Kokomo; also one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Memorials may be directed to the Center Road Church of Christ, or to SonLight Station Preschool, in care of Center Road Church of Christ. Envelopes will be available at the mortuary, also at the church. You may read Sheri’s obituary at www.ellersmortuary.com, where you can sign the guestbook, order flowers or share a personal message to the family.
