Catherine S. Stephens, 68, passed away at 9:40 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013, at home in Kokomo. Cathy was born Aug. 8, 1944, in Evansville, to the late John Calvin Sr. and Blendena (Wilson) Bruce. On Feb. 21, 1970, she married Jerry G. Stephens, who died Jan. 20, 2008.
Active in Job’s Daughters, she graduated from Evansville Central High School in 1962. Cathy then earned her B.S. in 1966 and her M.S. in 1969 in education from Indiana State University. After working in Connecticut and Lake Ridge, she taught science at Northwestern Middle School through 2006.
Besides working with the yearbook, academic team and other school groups, Cathy volunteered for Chi Omega sorority, Howard Haven and Northwestern Lions Club. She was a member of First Christian Church in Kokomo and also enjoyed traveling, reading and working in her perennial garden. A wonderful mother, outstanding educator and loyal friend. Her smile will be missed by many.
Cathy is survived by her daughter, Nora (Oleg) Shaykhutdinov, Kokomo; her daughter, Nancy Stephens (Dr. Brian Etheridge), Silver City, N.M.; four grandchildren; brothers, Don and William Bruce; and sister, Karen Kerney.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Max and J. C. Bruce; her sister, Joyce Marlene Goodman Tokarz;, and a son, Job Stephens.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with the Rev. Will Jewsberry officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
