William G. “Willie” Washam, 84, passed away at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2014, in Knoxville, Tenn. He was born Aug. 17, 1929, in Union County, Tenn., to Harvey Logan and Ina Esther (Dukes) Washam. On April 3, 1952, Willie married Tressie Lou Wolfenbarger and she passed away July 17, 2009.
Willie was in the 101st Army Airborne division during the Korean War. When he came back home, Willie worked at Continental Steel for 31 years retiring in 1986. Willie was a member of the Honey Creek Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and treasurer. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Survivors include son William David “Dave” (Vickie) Washam, Greentown; daughter, Sandra (Virgil) Evans, Kokomo; two brothers, James (Sue) Washam, and Tray Washam, both of Union County, Tenn.; sister, Arlene (Jack) Rose, Maynardville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Angie Young, Racheal Fowler, Brandie Wines and April Thatcher; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Ina Washam; wife, Tressie Lou Washam; brother, Stanley Washam; and granddaughter, Nichcole Burnett.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Honey Creek Missionary Baptist Church, 250 Nashville St; Russiaville, with the Rev. Jim Stevenson officiating. Burial will follow in Galveston Cemetery with military honors. Friends may call upon the family from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church.
