Fornie A. Hughes Jr., Kokomo, went home to be with the Lord at 12:40 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2014, at St. Vincent Heart Hospital, Indianapolis. He was born March 16, 1935, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Fornie A. Hughes Sr. and Sarah (Carrell) Hughes. On June 6, 1959, he married Barbara A. (Kling) at Mount Zion Christian Church by her father, the Rev. Pat Kling.
Fornie graduated in 1952 from Woodlawn High School, Birmingham, Alabama, and then graduated from Auburn University in 1957 with a Chemical Engineering degree. He also attended Southwestern Baptist Seminary School from 1963 until 1965, in Fort Worth, Texas.
Fornie met Barbara at Haynes Stellite Company, where both of them worked. He was safety director at Southern Research Institute, Birmingham, Alabama, and River Gas Company in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His hobbies were genealogy and gardening.
Surviving are his wife of almost 55 years, Barbara A. Hughes, Kokomo; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Scott and LeeAnne Hughes, Russellville, Arkansas, and Curtis Hughes, Chattanooga, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Lauren Ashley Hughes, Birmingham, Alabama, Zach Hughes, and Kristin Hughes, both of Russellville, Arkansas; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother; Donald N. Hughes Sr.; and a sister; Sarah (Hughes) Moody.
Funeral services for Fornie will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Fair Havens Alliance Church, 1216 S. 300 West, Kokomo, with Pastors John Zwirn, Rex Kling and Neal Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in Clymer Cemetery, Miami County. Friends may visit with the family from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St.
Memorial contributions may be directed to either the Kokomo Rescue Mission or to the Salvation Army. Envelopes will be provided at the mortuary on Friday and at the church on Saturday.
