Maurice 'Maury' Edwin Oyler

Sept. 28, 1928 - May 15, 2014

Maurice ‘Maury’ Edwin Oyler, 85, died Thursday, May 15, 2014. He was born Sept. 28, 1928, to Reed and Christina (Peterson) Oyler in Grant County, where he lived and farmed his entire life. He graduated from Sweetser High School in 1946 and married Martha Louise Brown on Oct. 24, 1948. They celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Maury sang solos and duets with wife Martha at many churches, weddings and funerals. He was an active member of Richland Chapel Methodist Church for over 60 years, where he served in many positions including superintendent and youth leader. He also helped start Grace Community Church, where he served as song leader, and had been a charter member for 21 years.

He loved life, nature, trees, flowers and gardening. He enjoyed playing golf, horseshoes, bid euchre and bridge with friends. He also enjoyed watching westerns, Cubs, Colts, and I.U. on television. He was proud of passing securities test at the age of 42 at Butler University. He was a 4-H leader and finished first place at Indiana State Hog Judging in 1948. Above all, Maury held an extreme love for his family. He courageously fought a battle with cancer for 3½ years before he went to be with the Lord.

He was the father of two sons, Bruce Delan (Susie) Oyler and Ted Edwin Oyler, both of Marion; and one daughter, Nora Jane (Kent) McCracken, Van Buren.

He had six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, Aron (Tara) Oyler, their children Taylor, Alex, Jacob, and Riley, Ontario; Nathan (Nicole) Oyler, their children Landon and Jackson, Carmel; Meghan (Dan) Sadowski, their children Carter and McKenna; Westfield; Kayla Oyler, Marion; Tara (Eddie) Whittington, their children Blake and Lauren, Greenfield; Brad (Ashly) McCracken, and their children Elijah and Silas, Fort Wayne.

He also had brothers, Lewis (Susie) Oyler and Lowell ( Betty) Oyler, Marion, and the Rev. Myron (Betty) Oyler of Muncie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Paul Oyler.

Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, at Grace Community Church, with the Rev. Tom Mansbarger officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion.
