Pastor Phillip R. Conner, 68, Kokomo, went home to be with the Lord May 16, 2014. He was born Dec. 27, 1945, in Greenfield, Ohio, the son of Raymond and Janet (Towne) Conner. He married Polly Key June 17, 1966, in Bethel, Ohio, and she survives.
Phil graduated from Blanchester High School in Ohio in 1964. He went to Cincinnati Bible Seminary, where he served as student body president, played on the men’s basketball team, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1968.
He served as a pastor for more than 25 years in many Indiana and Illinois churches. He had been employed by Syndicate Sales for more than 15 years. He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene.
Phil was a creative person who enjoyed music and drama. He was very talented. He wrote, directed, and acted in over 35 full-length production dinner theaters. He and his wife, Polly, were often performing in original skits and plays which showcased his warm sense of humor.
In addition to music and drama, Phil was also talented in sports. He played basketball thru all four years of high school and into college. He was scouted by the Cincinnati Reds in baseball and was offered a position in the minor leagues, but declined because he wanted to become a pastor. He also enjoyed sports as a coach, and a spectator, especially as a father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, Polly, he is survived by three sons, Shawn, (Celeste) Conner, Kokomo, Ryan (Miriam) Conner, Aurora, Ohio, and Aaron (Jessica) Conner, LaGrange, Kentucky; six grandchildren, Savannah, Zoe, Callie, Coby, Carlie and Morgan; one sister, Judy (Verlin) Lareau, N. Syracuse, N.Y.; a niece, Lynn (Michael) Card; great-nephew, Nathanael Card and great-niece, Hannah Card; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew.
A memorial Service will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday at First Church of the Nazarene with Pastors David Leeder and David Stokes, officiating. (Pastor David Stokes is married to Phil’s cousin Marilyn who was like a sister to him.) The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church and one hour (noon to one) before the memorial service Tuesday.
