---- — Robert D (Bob) Howell passed away peacefully at his home in Statesboro, Ga., on Friday, July 5, 2013. He was born on March 28, 1933, in Kokomo to Ruth (Perrin) and Kenneth Howell. On Nov. 25, 1954, at Grace United Methodist Church in Kokomo, Bob married Beverly (Bev) Absher. She survives.
As a young boy, his favorite pastime was playing basketball in the neighborhood or at the YMCA. This was a passion that followed him through the years. He graduated from Kokomo High School, where he played basketball for four years. He went on to play ball at Lees McRae Junior College and then Virginia Tech.
Bob was drafted into the Army in January 1956 and served for two years, followed by four years of reserves. He worked at The Coca-Cola Bottling Co. for 43 years, first as office manager, then plant manager. He loved his work there and the people he worked with through the years. Prior to working at Coca-Cola, he worked at Lincoln Finance Corp.
Bob enjoyed playing golf and his monthly poker group. He also loved fishing, especially his annual fishing trips with dear friends. He enjoyed traveling and he and Bev took a number of fun trips, many with friends or family. He was a lifetime member of Elks Club. He attended Grace United Methodist Church.
Bob was a wonderful husband and father. He was blessed with many terrific friends and loving family members.
Surviving with his wife of 58 years is his daughter, Leigh. David, Matthew and Spencer Wesche also survive and were like grandchildren in Bob and Bev’s lives. Also surviving is David Hunt, a longtime family friend and “son” they never had. Marilyn Qualls also survives as their recently “adopted” daughter, friend and caregiver.
He was preceded in death by his parents and first daughter, Lisa.
There will be no services in Statesboro. The family asks that his family, friends and co-workers take time to celebrate Bob’s wonderful life.
We would like to thank the wonderful people at Advantage Hospice in Statesboro for their wonderful care and advice.
