Larry Dean Sumner, 73, Kokomo, passed away at 5:40 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at his residence. Born Sept. 30, 1939, in Kokomo, he was the son of the late George L. and Mary (Irwin) Sumner.
He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, serving in the Army’s 2nd Battalion of the 22nd Infantry during the Vietnam War. Following his career with the Army, he was then employed with the U.S. Postal Service, from which he retired. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Port Orange, Fla., and the Purple Heart Honor Society.
He is survived by one son, Michael Dean Sumner, Logansport; four daughters, Michelle Denise (Ed) Harner, Sherry Elaine Mahoney, and Jennifer Amy (Heath) Rouse, all of Kokomo, and Patricia Lynn Nevitt, Lafayette; two brothers, Bruce Sumner and Jerry Sumner, both of Kokomo; also 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Marion National Cemetery, Marion, with Chaplain Joel Flowers officiating. Military rites will be provided by the U.S. Army and the Kokomo Military Rites Team. Burial of cremains will follow.
