Betty J. (McCoy) Shumaker, 87, Phlox, passed away at 5:35 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at Century Villa Health Care. She was born in Howard County on May 15, 1926, to the late Charles T. and Katie A. (Johnson) McCoy. On Dec. 23, 1947, she married Glenn Shumaker. Glenn passed away in June 1995.
Betty graduated from Union Township High School in 1944. She began her working career at Delco. She then worked at the Waffle Stop, Golden Bear and the Breakfast House, where she managed the night shift and became known as “Big Betty.” Betty loved to play bingo, as well as euchre. She enjoyed her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.
Betty is survived by two children, Michael Shumaker, Surprise, Ariz., Pamela Shumaker, Kokomo; two grandchildren, Matthew Shumaker and David Shumaker, both of Surprise, Ariz.; one brother, Willard McCoy, Fort Wayne; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, seven sisters and two brothers.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Century Villa Chapel, 705 N. Meridian St., Greentown, with Pastor John O’Brien officiating. Burial will follow at a later date at Greenlawn Cemetery in Greentown.
