Martha Louise Maris

May 2, 1929 - May 8, 2013

Martha Louise Maris, 84, Kokomo, passed away at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Community Howard Regional Health. Martha was born May 2, 1929, in Paoli, to the late Earl Newlin and Lula M. Newlin (Longest). Her marriage to Glenn O. Maris, who preceded her in death, was Feb. 5, 1949, in Paoli.

She worked at Bedford Limestone after her husband came home from the war to help put him through school. She also worked at Delco for 22 years in the purchasing department. She was a member of the Howard County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, a member and past president of Phi Beta Psi Sorority, started the Daffodil Day, headed up the fudge sale for the sorority, which was an annual event. She served as an officer at the national level of her sorority. Martha was a two-time breast cancer survivor. She touched the lives of many people, whether it was through her work or civic activities. She was an avid shopper. The greatest joy of her life was her family.

Survivors include three sons, Mark T. Maris (Cheryl), Russiaville, Michael “Joe” Maris (Kathy), Malakoff, Texas, and Brett A. Maris (Beth), Kokomo; a daughter, Lynn “Camille” Maris-Wood (Robert), Chaska, Minn.; 12 grandchildren, Amanda Maris, Brandon Maris (Stephanie), Ryan Maris, Neil Maris, Annah Roasa (Tyler), Melissa Maris, Mallory Maris, Michael Wood (Jackie), Jonathan Wood (Chana), Katherine Wood, Christopher Wood and Stephen Wood; three great-grandchildren, Sophia Wood, Ava Wood, and Porter Starkey; and several nieces and nephews.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Glenn O. Maris.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Friends Meeting, 1801 Zartman Road. There will be an hour of calling before the service at 11 a.m. Gary Jones will be officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery.
